Yellow Belt Seminar
1. What is a Yellow Belt?
A Yellow belt knows how to perform the basic moves properly. AYellow belt can step behind turn and block without adjusting the feet. A Yellow belt can perform all of the Kata up to the Yellow belt level without pause. A Yellow belt knows what kinds of Karate are on Okinawa, what kinds of Te existed on Okinawa, who is the father of modern Karate, who was the founder of Akido and Judo, and some of the names and meanings of the various Martial Arts styles.
2. What fighting skills should a Yellow Belt possess?
A Yellow belt know basic kicks and punches. During kumite aYellow belt should be able to throw a backfist, a reverse punch, a ridge hand, a shuto, a jab, and a hammer fist. During kumite a Yellow belt should be able to throw a front leg front kick, a rear leg front kick, a font and rear leg round kick, a front and rear leg side kick, and a step in side kick.
3. What about one-steps
A Yellow belt will be able to perform all classical one steps and to perform them in any order called out by another student or by the Sensei.
4. What about weapons?
A Yellow belt must be able to name the five major Okinawanian weapons.
5. What about Judo
A Yellow belt should know basic hand and wrist locks and be able to execute them with an appetizer, main course and desert.
6. What Kata must aYellow belt know to test for the rank of Green Belt
A Yellow belt must be able to perform the following kata strong and without hesitation at their Green belt test:
Kihon Kata 1-5
Nahanchi 1
Pinon Kata's 1-2
In the performance of these kata's the stances must be correct and the block must be strong. The test kata's must be performed well, the other kata's must demonstrate an improved level of performance.
7. What other things count?
A Yellow belt will exhibit discipline and respect for their fellow students and their Sensei. This will be judged by the attention level of the students and by the level of effort that the student exhibits during class. It is not necessary to be skilled at a particular technique but it is necessary that a Yellow belt be able to concentrate on learning a technique.
8. What fighting skills should aYellow belt testing for Green belt possess?
At a Green belt test a testing candidate should be able to demonstrate basic punches and kicks. Their fighting would consist of throwing various well executed punches and kinchs at their opponents.
Since a Yellow belts techniques are becoming hard enough to injure someone, a Yellow belt testing for Green belt will be expected to demonstrate control of their techniques. These skills can be gained by regular attendance at the Friday night Kumite class (7:00pm). A Yellow belt going to Green belt should also demonstrate some physical fitness i.e. you should be able to fight a 15 minute round without becoming exhausted. At a Green belt test a Yellow belt will be required to fight 3 one minute rounds without any rest between the rounds.
