Green Belt Seminar

1. What is a Green Belt?

A Green belt knows how to perform the basic moves properly. A Green belt can step behind turn and block without adjusting the feet. A green belt can perform all of the Kata up to the Green belt level without pause. A Green belt knows what kinds of Karate are on Okinawa, what kinds of Te existed on Okinawa, who is the father of modern Karate, who was the founder of Akido and Judo, and some of the names and meanings of the various Martial Arts styles.

2. What fighting skills should a Green Belt possess?

A Green belt know basic kicks and punches. During kumite a Green belt should be able to throw a backfist, a reverse punch, a ridge hand, a shuto, a jab, and a hammer fist. During kumite a Green belt should be able to throw a front leg front kick, a rear leg front kick, a font and rear leg round kick, a front and rear leg side kick, a step in side kick, and a spinning side kick.

3. What about one-steps

A Green belt will be able to perform all classical and functional one steps and to perform them in any order called out by another student or by the Sensei.

4. What about weapons?

The demonstration of a weapon is not a requirement to reach Blue belt. A Green belt may want to demonstrate a weapon at the Blue belt test but they will not be judged on their performance using the weapon. However, a Green belt is working on gaining proficiency with the handling of at least one weapon. Usually at GAMA, students begin with handling a nunchuku, however other non-bladed weapons can be studied also at the Green belt level. A Green belt student should be able to perform at least one complete weapons kata without hesitation even though they will not be tested on that kata until the rank of San Kyu(3rd Brown).

5. What about Judo

A Green belt should know basic hand and wrist locks and be able to execute them with an appetizer, main course and desert.

6. What Kata must a Green belt know to test for the rank of Blue Belt

A Green belt must be able to perform the following kata strong and without hesitation at their Blue belt test:

Kihon Kata 1-5

Nahanchi Kata's 1-2

Pinon Kata's 1-4

In the performance of these kata's the stances must be correct and the block must be strong. The test kata's must be performed well, the other kata's must demonstrate an improved level of performance.

7. What other things count?

Above all a Blue belt is a person who can flow. So a Green belt testing for Blue belt will be asked to demonstrate flow up and down the Dojo floor using a series of offensive techniques of their choice. This is an important requirement and at your Blue belt test you may be asked to do this more than once.

8. What fight skills should a Green belt testing for Blue belt possess?

At a Blue belt test a testing candidate should be able to demonstrate some rudimentary combinations. Their fighting would consist of throwing various combinations at their opponents instead of throwing one move and stopping.

Since a Green belts techniques are becoming hard enough to injure someone, a Green belt testing for Blue belt will be expected to demonstrate control of their techniques. These skills can be gained by regular attendance at the Friday night Kumite class (7:00pm). A Green belt going to Blue belt should also demonstrate some physical fitness i.e. you should be able to fight a 15 minute round without becoming exhausted.
